Buckfast Abbey 21 October 2017

C20 SW AGM and visit

Our next AGM and a visit to Buckfast Abbey – On the 21st October we will be visiting Buckfast Abbey, founded in 1018, dissolved by Henry V111, but decades later rebuilt by Benedictine monks and completed in 1938. We will start the day at 11am at the Conference Centre, (the former school, Brett & Pollen 1965-8) for the C20 South West AGM, a brief meeting before Peter Beacham OBE, (author of the revised Cornwall 2014 with Nikolaus Pevsner), will give us a talk on the C20/early C21 history of the abbey and precinct development and a tour of the Centre. Peter has recently edited a book, ‘Buckfast Abbey, History, Art and Architecture’, with a chapter on the buildings of our period contributed by Alan Powers.

We will then ascend the tower of the abbey church to get an overview of the whole site. Following lunch in the Grange restaurant, (Michael Tyrell Associates in association with Richard Riley 1991), we will look at the abbey church and Blessed Sacrament Chapel (Walls & Pearn 1962-6, with spectacular glass by Dom Charles Norris), and take a tour of the precinct and late C20/early C21 buildings, including Southgate by Allen Van der Steen Architects 1992 and Westgate by Richard Riley 1991. There will be a charge of £5 for the talk and tours, payable on the day. To help gauge numbers, please email tonystokoe@me.com if you would like to attend.
